Support Fund for Five Tongan Workers In Fatal Traffic Accident in Katikati
When you go to work in the morning, you expect to come home at night.
In the case of the five Tongan workers who lost their lives last week, they expected to return home at the end of the harvest season to their families in Tonga.
This is a massive tragedy. One the whole horticulture industry is responding to. The workers died last Tuesday night as they left work from Aongatete Coolstores. Horticulture New Zealand President Julian Raine has expressed sympathy to those affected, and I join Julian and all of us in the horticulture industry in expressing our joint and sincere sympathy.
The 9,000 RSE workers that come down to NZ each year play a vital part in the horticulture and viticulture industries. They ensure that we can harvest on time and sell our premium products to the world. They enable us to employ more full time and seasonal New Zealanders. They are, truly, an integral part of our horticulture family. And so, as an industry, we will support their families at this terrible time.
The industry has a charitable fund set up to deal with these tragic situations. My family has made a donation to the fund and ask that you do the same.
The Kiwifruit Industry Community Support Fund Charitable Incorporated Society is taking donations to support the families of the deceased.*
