Two sets of rules won’t work in the Waikato
Having two sets of rules never works – it is divisive, and always leaves someone feeling disadvantaged. So HortNZ was surprised and disappointed when we learned the Waikato Regional Council (WRC) was slicing out an area previously covered by its notified Proposed Waikato Regional Plan Change 1, to allow consultation with Hauraki iwi authorities.
This leaves some of our growers in the Pukekohe area covered by two rules – part of their properties are still part of Plan Change 1 and other parts are in the area that has been withdrawn, with no timeframe given, for consultation. This is untenable.
HortNZ has called for the WRC to withdraw the entire notified Proposed Waikato Regional Plan Change 1 to allow full and proper consultation. The Hauraki iwi authorities have highlighted a consultation issue, but we believe it is unfair for the WRC to deal with their claims and ignore the effect of this option on others.
We support the objective of cleaning up the Waikato and Waipa Rivers and all tributaries. But this is an 80-year plan. So let’s spend the time and get things right up front. Let’s take as much consultation time as is needed. Let’s keep the process fair and equitable.
To now start splitting the Waikato up for extra consultation is flawed, and unfair to growers and the community.
