Fresh commodity exports to Fiji require additional declaration

From 15 March 2024, all fresh commodity exports to Fiji require an ‘Additional Declaration’ on the phytosanitary certificate confirming that the consignment is free from Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda, FAW). 

The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) notified about emergency measures for pre-export fumigation measured for FAW. In lieu of methyl bromide fumigation options in New Zealand, the interim measures of the Additional Declaration following phytosanitary inspection is required between 15-31 March 2024 and does not apply to consignments re-exported from New Zealand.

This pre-export requirement does not apply to semi processed, processed or frozen products.

All permits to import issued by BAF prior to the 15 March remain valid, however the corresponding Phytosanitary Certificate for each commodity must include the new Additional Declaration. MPI has updated the Fiji Importing Country Phytosanitary Requirement (ICPR) and the documents can be found here. 

MPI and BAF are actively negotiating an equivalence request for the fumigation requirement, and MPI will provide updates as they become available.
