Fruit fly update

7 March 2025

Biosecurity New Zealand is continuing its response to the recent detection of a single male Oriental fruit fly in Birkdale, Auckland.

Legal controls on the movement of fruit and vegetables in the affected area are expected to remain in place until at least 10 April as a precautionary measure.

It is encouraging that to date no further fruit flies have been detected, however, ongoing surveillance, including trap monitoring and fruit inspections, is critical to ensuring this pest does not establish in New Zealand.

More details can be found on the Biosecurity New Zealand website.

If you suspect a fruit fly infestation, report it immediately to MPI’s pest and diseases hotline at 0800 80 99 66.
